FCHD professor Brian Higginbotham receives alumni honor

Brian Higginbotham was named the 2013 Young Alumni Distinguished Service Award from Brigham Young University Alumni earlier this fall.

He graduated from BYU and went on to earn his Ph.D in Human Development and Family Studies from Auburn University. He is now associate vice president for extension at Utah State University and an associate professor in the Family, Consumer, and Human Development Department at the College. He heads up the Smart Steps to Healthy Relationships in Utah project, which includes Smart Steps for Stepfamilies and How to Avoid Falling for a Jerk/Jerkette classes.

The classes help people go into relationships more prepared, he said. "People of all walks of life and of all ages come. .. They want to have a healthy relationship but it's somewhat scary when so many individuals in our society are getting divorces."

In Utah, where people tend to marry younger and have more children than the national average, the stakes are especially high, he said.
